Drunkship of Lanterns
I have taken a song by a progressive rock group called The Mars Volta and visualised it. The song is called 'Drunkship of Lanterns' and is from an album which was based on a book that the lead singer wrote. The book tells the story of an old friend who committed suicide after coming out a coma and not being satisfied with the world.
The song comes at a point in the book where the man is dreaming. I am interested in whether the music tells the story as well as the book, whether the band can put images in your head by using a variety of different styles and tempos and linking them all together in this seven minute track.
I used research along with my thoughts and a class survey to create this montage of vector images which tells the story of the song. The aim is that you can experience the song without even hearing one note; have the same feelings and emotions as listening to it by simply following it's visual progression.
There are two final pieces, a large print and an animation.
