New blog : Old content

Friday, August 28th, 2009

So I’ve just updated my entire portfolio – I’ve completely changed the design (I think this style represents me much better than the previous one), and I’ve added some new projects, and some new imagery for some old projects.

Originally, this blog tracked the progression of my final year at university, and every one of the 28 previous posts is on this subject. Whether it be the writing of my dissertation, or my technical study, or on the development of ‘Work Mates’. I have decided to leave this content in place for anyone who wishes to see how I got my degree, but from now on the topic of conversation will be quite different…

I will try and interest people by talking about current projects, posting up ideas and work in development, but I will also discuss the industry and how I am finding things at the moment – Whether that be problems, eureka moments, or just random things that I find out about or that I am interested in.

As for this first post, I’m afraid that’s it! But I will be back soon with something of significance just as soon as I’ve got a spare minute to talk about it.

Cheers,

Chris

p.s. I’m testing this WP to Twitter plugin too, so fingers crossed that works OK!

The Shoot

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

Over the last couple of days I have been shooting the first episode of Work Mates. It was a very stressful, but very rewarding process.

Tuesday 5th May

Originally I had the green screen room booked from 12 until 5, but after considering the amount of setting up that was necessary, I approached the member of staff that was responsible for bookings and requested that I have access earlier than this. I managed to get access from about about 11, so an extra hour was plenty of time for setting up.

There were a lot of different props that needed to be brought both from my house and from the multimedia studio, so I recruited some friends to give me a hand. There was everything from my graduation robes, to salt and pepper pots, to a flip chart, a table, and many other bits and pieces.

My actors on this day were Lucas, Peter, Shabaz, Suhail, and Adal. They arrived between 12:30 and 1, only to find me still setting up and requesting that they put make-up on! Thankfully they were quite willing to do it themselves and it actually turned out really well!

The day went really well, I shot scenes 3, 4, and 7… but also did a couple of lines from scenes 5 and 6. At times it was very frustrating. People forgot lines, laughed, joked, looked at the camera, walked in at the wrong time, and not a single shot was captured in one take. I was very forgiving though as I imagine that this is what it is like on a professional set, and it was all a bit of fun at the same time! There were times when we could have done hundreds of takes to get the shot exactly as I would have liked, however, due to time restrictions sometime I had to settle for second best.

At the end of the day I was exhausted, but happy with my achievements, and confident that the following afternoon would be even better.

Wednesday 6th May

Before I left on the Tuesday I found out that no one was due to use the screen on Wednesday morning. This enabled me to leave all the equipment in the room over night (there is a pin-code lock on the door), and I therefore had less to do in terms of setting up for the second, and final afternoon of shooting.

After transporting a few extra props into the room I was ready to go. The actors on this day were Lucas, Peter, Oliver, and Ryan. They arrived at about 1pm and I made sure that I shot scene 1 first. This was because I didn’t want Oliver and Ryan sitting around while I shoot things that they were not involved in. All the remaining scenes were shot on this day (scenes 1, 2, 5, and 6).

Overall this day was less stressful that the previous one. I was more comfortable and I had less people to manage. I was worried initially because these were the most important scenes. This is due to the fact that they introduce and build the character profiles which give the viewer an understanding of how their minds work, and ultimately make the show funnier.

I am very happy with my achievements over the last couple of days. I do not think that the shoot could have gone any better considering the circumstances (although it is far from perfect). Now it’s time to start editing!

Costume Design

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

Scene one of Work Mates Episode One – ‘The Call Centre’, takes place at Tom and Nathan’s graduation ceremony, and therefore a couple of gowns are needed as costumes. In scene two, Nathan is again seen wearing his gown in the scene where they are sat at home. Due to the fact that robes are very expensive to hire I decided to call on a couple of friends who study Fashion Design to make them for me. Over the last couple of days the main gowns have been created, only leaving the coloured sashes to be completed.

The garments have turned out brilliantly and I owe the two girls a big favour. They have gone out of their way to help me out and I have saved a lot of money!

Below are a few shots of the robes being made, from initial template design to the finished product:

Open Web Content

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

Something that I have failed to mention so far in relation to the Work Mates project, is my passion for promoting more open Web content. As a result of my dissertation research, and the conclusions that I arrived at, I have really started to believe that the best route forward is to push for more open access to everything that is published on the Internet. The Web inspires people and breeds creativity, and we should embrace it rather than try to stop people from “infringing copyright”. In many ways it benefits the producer of such material, especially as it allows more people to see/hear/play with it. If people respect the purpose of the original material then I see no reason for everything to be freely available.

I may sound naive in saying this, because obviously there are many other things to consider. However, even though my dissertation is purely focussed on music, many of the arguments can be applied to most of the content on the Internet. It discusses the most significant of these in much detail and rationally puts them to rest. (”The Future of Digital Music: How to Overcome the Copyright Crisis” will be available to download in the near future if anyone is interested).

Anyway, back to my original point… My interest in promoting this whole idea has lead me to add as much content to the Work Mates website as possible and encourage it all to be downloaded, shared, and creatively edited (so long as appropriate recognition is given). The episodes will be downloadable in two both SD and HD, the scripts are available, as are many backstage photos and interviews with the cast and crew.

This is something that i really feel strongly about and will push as much as possible. It will be really interesting if people take my material and make something new with it… push it beyond its original intensions and reach more people than I ever could on my own.
