Special Study: Customising my TiddlyWiki

There are three major modules which make up the final year of my Multimedia Degree: Dissertation, Studio Project, and Special Study. My dissertation has been completed and handed in and I am well on my way with the studio project, however, I am yet to really start on the Special Study module and I am beginning to worry a little.

The aim of this module is to find a topic which is technically related to your studio project, and write 6000 words about it. It is not supposed to be theoretical like the dissertation, more of a factual information source which will help both you, (in completing your project), and others who may be interested in the area that you are discussing.

The submission format is a TiddlyWiki. A TiddlyWiki is “a single html file which has all the characteristics of a wiki – including all of the content, the functionality (including editing, saving, tagging and searching) and the style sheet. Because it’s a single file, it’s very portable – you can email it, put it on a web server or share it via a USB stick.” Submitting it in this way allows us to write in a non-linear fashion, producing and saving “chunks” of information, rather than a continuous essay.

I have chosen to write about Production Systems – specifically the system by which my project has been coordinated, and comparing that to how a high-budget feature film would be produced. More specifically, I will be looking into the non-hierarchical nature of my project, and the comparable benefits or problems that the extremely hierarchical structure of Hollywood films may cause.

Customising a TiddlyWiki was not as simple as I first thought! Below is the result of about a days work, next to the original skin. It may not look like much, but when you are not familiar with the way it has bee styled these things take a bit of working out! – There were a lot annoying little problems that I had to fix (mainly caused by IE of course), some of which are still a little iffy…
